Instagram rolled out a new feature that allows users to hide inappropriate comments on its platform. In the past, it let only celebrities or public figures on the platform have control on the comments on the photos or videos they upload, but now the same filtering tool applies to its 500 million users.
The main motive for this change is to ensure that everyone in the platform is comfortable and is surrounded more by positive rather than negative vibes.
“To empower each individual, we need to promote a culture where everyone feels safe to be themselves without criticism or harassment. It’s not only my personal wish to do this, I believe it’s also our responsibility as a company. So, today, we’re taking the next step to ensure Instagram remains a positive place to express yourself.”, said Instagram’s CEO, Kevin Systrom.
The tool, keyword moderation, can be used by any user by following the below steps:
- Tap the gear icon on your instagram profile/ if you are using the web, tap the “edit profile” option.
- Click on comments, and you will see a new comments tool that will let you choose a set of words that you find offensive. Once these words are set, comments with these words will be hidden from posts henceforth.
- To hide abusive comments in general, you will need to enable the “hide inappropriate comments” option.
- Click Submit.
Once this tool is used to hide inappropriate comments, the users’ followers will no longer be able to view comments containing the chosen words. Most of the platforms (from Twitter to now Instagram) are moving towards make their respective platforms a safe place for their users.
