According to a recent report from TechCrunch, Facebook messenger will start rolling out ads in a few months. A confidential document obtained by TechCrunch, reveals that Facebook has launched a URL short link fb.com/msg/ that instantly opens a chat thread with a business on messenger. Facebook confirmed the existence of the URL short link, but did not give out many details surrounding the messenger ads.
Private ad-messages from businesses can get annoying and result in individuals unfollowing the business page, especially when the ads aren’t targeted correctly. But then, only individuals who have previously communicated in private with the business will receive such ads. Facebook has been pushing businesses to use messenger for nearly a year now. Communication with businesses through messenger started in March 2015, when Facebook had launched its “Business On Messenger”, which allowed customers to privately communicate with a representative. Following that, Facebook enhanced its chat capabilities and let businesses have a “Send a Message” button for their Facebook page.
This piece of information could change the approach of businesses on Facebook – encouraging them to start conversation threads with customers and potential customers, and equipping themselves when the feature launches.
