Apple is now ready to venture into a new market and the latest is that it is working on the release of smart digital glasses. Bloomberg reports that these smart glasses would connect wirelessly to the iPhone and would provide displays of images and other information to the user.
Apple does not seem much affected by the recent failure of the Google Glass. CEO Tim Cook still believes that AR is the future. There are many challenges that come with developing augmented reality glasses. They need to not only be visually appealing but also need to protect others’ privacy.
“Augmented reality is going to take a while, because there are some really hard technology challenges there, but it will happen in a big way, and we will wonder when it does, how we ever lived without it. Like we wonder how we lived without our phone today.”, CEO Cook said.
According to reports, Apple is currently under pressure (ever since sales of iPhones and iPads have declined) to develop new successful products, and has been speaking to suppliers and has even placed a recent order of a near-eye display from a supplier.
“AR can be really great, and we have been and continue to invest a lot in this,” Cook said in a July 26 conference call with analysts. “We are high on AR for the long run. We think there are great things for customers and a great commercial opportunity.”
The release is not expected until 2018.
